Some Tips for Those Who Accumulate Ear Wax

If you have no history of perforation of the ear drum, you may safely loosen the wax using hydrogen peroxide (full strength, right out of the bottle is OK), or Debrox® Drops (OTC)

  1. Put a few drops into each ear, using an eyedropper, and let it fizz for a minute.

  2. Flush gently with warm water, utilizing an ear syringe (a bulb syringe available at your drugstore).

  3. The temperature of this water should be the same as you would use for a baby’s bottle – body temperature – otherwise the flushing will make you dizzy.

  4. Do this once per week (any less, and you’ll forget!)

  5. If checked____ : Put 5 drops of mineral oil in the ear once per day/week/month

Please do not put Q-tips or bobby pins or any small objects in your ear. We have seen serious ear injuries, and damage to hearing as a result of these items accidentally getting jammed into the ear!

If you like, you may use a moist washcloth or tissue paper around a finger to clean the outer part of the ear.

If you start to feel plugged up, don’t hesitate to give us a call (though you must call your primary doctor first if you’re in an HMO).
